Description

ORIGINAL LESTER GEORGE HORNBY (1882-1956) ‘THE FIGHTING YANK – MARNE 1918’ WORLD WAR 1 ETCHING
This is really a wonderful original.  I just acquired an incredible collection of original Lester Hornby etchings from his work during World War 1.  I have had a few of these in the past, but most of them are scarce as they were printed in editions of between 30 and about 90.  I acquired this collection as it was de-accessed from a Massachusetts museum and they come to the museum from the estate of the artist.  Outstanding provenance.  Hornby’s WWI etchings were exhibited exhibited at the Library of Congress as well as the Kennedy Gallery in 1920.  A monograph was created by Godspeed Books of these works in 1921 and can be found on google books.  For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below.  This is one of my favorites of the collection as it is just a great portrait of a US soldier.  According to the book, this one was done in an edition of only 40.
Etching image measures 8 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches on sheet measuring 12 1/4 x 9 3/4 inches.  Signed and titled in pencil below image.  Initialed, titled, and dated in the plate lower right.  Estate stamp lower left corner.  Excellent condition.  A few other pencil notations in the margins and verso probably from the museum inventory.  Unframed.  FREE SHIPPING ANYWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES!  If you are interested in Hornby’s WWI etchings check my store for the others I am offering.  You can also see the others on the Instagram page for Jonah Fine Art.
For those not familiar with the artist, his biography from askart reads: “
